File Preparation Equipment & Capabilities

Preparing your files for transport to us here at Franklin Press is probably the most important part of the process of getting your job printed and out on time. Depending on the complexity of the job, it may be as simple as copying your file to a disk. However the process is usually much more involved. It is very important that you include all components of the files that you are using in your final document, such as ALL FONTS, art that was placed in the document, and photos that were placed in your document. Besides including the art files that were placed, usually as a TIFF or EPS, please include the parent file that you used to create the TIFF or EPS. If you are using any color in your document, make sure that all color files are set up for CMYK color separations, NOT RGB. All Black and White photos should be set to gray scale. If you are using spot colors, such as PANTONE 285 CV, DO NOT change the name of the ink to MY RED, this will cause the RIP to stop because it can not find that ink color in the ink table. Also make sure that the ink naming is the same across all programs, such as PANTONE 285 CV, PANTONE 285 CVC, PANTONE 285. Each one of the ink names above would separate into individual printing plates unless the naming is exactly the same. Adobe Illustrator is one program in particular that uses the CVC at the end of the ink name; most other programs use the CV or no coating extension.

Of course the easiest way to get all of this together is to use Adobe Acrobat 4.0 to generate PDFs of your documents. This will result in only a single file for you to copy and send to us. PDF files include all items necessary for us to produce your job. Before producing your PDFs there are some settings that must be changed to get your file ready for high end digital printing. The default settings are designed for reproducing your documents to be displayed on computer screens at 72dpi. In the printing process we need the files to be set at a minimum of 2400dpi.

If you are interested in using Adobe Acrobat 4.0 to generate PDFs of your documents, please contact one of our prepress support technicians. They can tell you how to download our Adobe Acrobat Distiller 4.0 setting and generate your files correctly.
